North (timelapse)

North -timelapsen suosio on hieman yllättänyt. Julkaisin videon ja uudet sivut viime viikon keskiviikkona ja torstaina liikennettä oli jo 450GB edestä, joten jouduin ottamaan videon hetkeksi pois sivuiltani, etteivät liikennerajoitukset ylity. Perjantaiaamuna limiitit tulivat sitten täyteen ja sivut olivat pari tuntia kiinni. Pätkää on katsottu kuudessa päivässä Youtuben kautta n. 12.000 kertaa. Suosittelen laadun takia katsomaan timelapsen Vimeon kautta. Laatuongelmat ovat tuottaneet hieman harmaita hiuksia, koska Northin ollessa ensimmäinen tekemäni pätkä, niin kokemuksen Premieren enkoodereista on pyöreät nolla. Seuraavaa pätkää ei pusketa ihan näin kovalla vauhdilla ulos. :)

Kaikki timelapset joissa näkyy tähdet on kuvattu yöllä. Valotusajat kuville 5-32s, ISO herkkyydet 1600-5000. Liikkuvat timelapset on toteutettu Kesslerin sliderillä.

Kiitos!

Couple of Behind the Scene shots above.

The popularity of the North timelapse video surprised me. I published the video and new website on Wednesday. On Thursday the traffic already passed 450GB so I had to take the video offline so that I’d have enough bandwidth til Friday. Well, needless to say it didn’t last and Friday morning the limits exceeded and had to wait for couple of hours for hosting company get me more bandwidth. North has been viewed approx. 12.000 times from Youtube. I’d recommend Vimeo for better quality. And quality is something I’ve been struggling with this first clip as I have no clue how encoders work in Premiere. Next clip won’t be published with such haste as this one. :)

I’ve received many question related to the making of the timelapse through e-mail and social media. I’ll try to answer most asked questions here. All timelapses where stars are visible have been shot at night. Full moon makes everything look like day. Approximately 20.000 photos have been taken for these timelapses with two camera – Canon 5D Mark II & Mark III. Three different lenses were used: Canon 14mm, 24mm & 17-40mm. No filters were used other than in two creek timelapses in the beginning. Creek timelapses were used with ND-filter to gain longer exposure time to blur the water. Exposure times have been between 5s to 32s and ISO from 1600 to 5000. Moving timelapses were made with Kessler slider.

All the timelapses are shot between August 2013 and January 2014 in Northern Finland. Locations are Koitelinkoski (Kiiminki), Lake Oulujärvi, Rokua, Kipinä (Pudasjärvi), Ahvenjärvi, Äkäslompolo (Ylläs), Oijärvi and Varjakka (Oulunsalo).

Aurora Borealis / Northern Light forecasts I’m following through Aurora Service (Europe) and weather through Foreca (Finnish), FMI (Finnish) & YR.NO (Norway). So not in the right place at the right time by accident. For example, to get on top of this page milky way photo, I had to wait for three months. New moon and clear sky was required to make milky way visible. Temperature was at -20°C (-4°F) and open windy lake behind my back that quaranteed fresh experience that night. That night I got to stay in cabin. Unfortunately the cabin temperature was the same as outside. After warming it up for 17 hours I managed to get it to 0°C (32°F).

At the moment so much traffic is coming outside Finland that I already changed the menu to English. Later when I find the best way to maintain the whole site I’ll change it to multilingual (at least Finnish and English).
